Waiheke Radio marked Christmas 2008 by broadcasting a recording of the Waiheke Choral Society and Waiheke choir Sister Shout performing Handel's Messiah. We recorded the live performance at St Peter's Church in Oneroa, Waiheke Island, New Zealand and broadcast it on Christmas Eve and again on Christmas Day.
Waiheke Radio is a not-for-profit community radio station that's always trying to bring a local angle to our programme so they were thrilled to work with the Choral Society on this project and celebrate a Waiheke Christmas.
Messiah, composed by George Frideric Handel and based on a libretto by Charles Jennens is Handel's most famous creation and is among the most popular works in Western choral literature.
The work is divided into three parts which address different aspects in the life of Christ with Part One primarily concerned with the Advent and Christmas stories.
On the 7th of Dec, 2008 the Waiheke Choral Society and Sister Shout performed Part One along with the famous Hallelujah Chorus at St Peter's Church in Oneroa, overlooking the beautiful Oneroa Bay.
Waiheke Radio was there to record the performance and was proud to present this local rendition of Handel's Messiah.
